Salt Lake Council Pledges $1 Million to Center

Slow January Housing Market - Gloomy Builders

The National Association of Home Builders has an index which measures the perceptions of builders on current market conditions, interest from buyers, and projected home sales over the next six months. Wednesday, the Association announced that the index came in at 19 in January - the second-lowest point on record. However, builders predict a rebound in sales in 2009. The Fed has indicated that the US economy is losing momentum and that the overall business outlook is very uncertain. This is due in no small part to the mortgage crisis leading to tighter credit standards, slowing the rate of sales on new homes.

Inflation Rises by Largest Amount Since 1990

Inflation rose by the largest amount in 17 years due in part to higher costs for energy and food. Prices for these products rose by the largest margin since 1990. Prices for consumer goods increased by 4.1 percent for all of 2007, up from a 2.5 percent increase in 2006, according to the Labor Department. The Federal Reserve said that output at the nation's factories, mines and utilities showed flat growth in December, indicating that the economy was slowing at the end of 2007. The Federal Reserve is closely watching to see whether the jump in food and energy becomes more widespread and starts pushing core inflation higher. The central bank is considering cutting interest rates further to offset the mortgage meltdown crisis.

Income Tax Cut Off the Table

Property tax relief on Salt Lake Real Estate is the only tax cut area Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. will consider with an open mind. The Governor is very cautious about tax relief due to the faltering economy. "I've never felt that we ought to have tax cuts as our priorities this year. I'm not going to look seriously at anything beyond a property tax relief package . . . the other areas I'm just not interested in," he said in an interview. A tax law went into effect Jan. 1 creating a "flat" income tax that will reduce taxes by $110 million. The state House is considering a tax-cut of about $88 million, with $15 million going toward a credit for those paying for health insurance with post-tax dollars. The rest will go to property tax relief. "We don't have any income tax cuts planned," said Senate President John Valentine says in addition to property tax cuts, senators are looking at two secondary areas. One involves giving a tax break to corporations that do out-of-state sales, and the other would attempt to better equalize state funding for school buildings.

iProvo's a go, mayor says

Provo's Mayor, Lewis Billings is standing by the city's fiber-optic network, iProvo, despite critic's claims that the service's turnover rate is way too high. iProvo brings enhanced phone and internet service to Salt Lake Homes. Billings said he's been warned that criticism of iProvo may keep people from signing on, but he's sure it will succeed. "We remain optimistic and committed to the success of this project ," Billings said. "We are going to bring this project to a positive point where even our critics will embrace it."

New-home demand fell 36 percent along Wasatch Front in 2007

Demand for new Salt Lake Homes along the Wasatch Front dropped in 2007 to the lowest level since 1993. Builders requested permits for 9,877 single-family homes along the Wasatch Front in 2007, representing a 36 percent decrease from 2006. Nationally, builders have been struggling with a slow-down in the home-sale market, but the Wasatch Front's market didn't begin to falter until early last summer. The downturn in Utah and other markets is being fueled in great part by tighter lending standards put in place over the summer after the meltdown nationally in subprime lending.

Gunman Sentenced to Prison - Real Estate Agent Paralyzed

Salt Lake City Realtors saw a measure of justice when 24-year old Jason Hines of Nevada was sentenced for the Auguest 3rd, 2007 shooting of 45 year old real estate agent Tracy Armstrong. Armstrong was shot twice in the chest and once in the neck by Hines at the front desk of Panguitch Lake cabins. The attack was unprovoked and was followed by Hine's attempt to shoot the Realtor's son, an attempt to abduct a child and an attempt to steal a car, all at a nearby campground. Hines was subdued and arrested by three sheriff's deputies and a Utah Highway Patrol officer. Hines pled guilty and was sentenced to a term of four years to life. Armstrong remains paralyzed from the attack.
